Mission Statement

South Carolina Association of Art Therapists (SCATA) is an inclusive professional community for art therapists, students, and supporters who are working to promote diversity and the advancement of art therapy as a profession. SCATA pledges to pursue the highest ethical practice, advocate for legislature, and create ongoing professional development and educational opportunities across the state of South Carolina.

We wanted to acknowledge the work that our chapter's secretary, Ashton Sullivan has done for the community of Beaufort, SC. She facilitated Art Therapy services to help those who have suffered from the impact of Hurricane Helene. (November 2024)

President

Katie Hinson Sullivan, MPS, LCAT, ATCS, ATR-BC is an art therapist and the founder and Director of the Arts in Healing Department at MUSC Health. She earned her undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston and her master’s from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Katie has worked across schools, hospitals, and community settings supporting individuals who have experienced trauma and spent three years at Rikers Island using art as a restorative tool for incarcerated individuals. Passionate about advancing the field of art therapy, she is committed to strengthening access, advocacy, and education for future clinicians and communities across South Carolina.

President-Elect 

Dena Ewing, MA, LPC, ATR-BC, RYT-200 is a Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC Supervisor Candidate in SC and Board Certified Art Therapist. She is the founder of a Charleston based private practice, Art of Ascension, where she uses body based interventions to support trauma healing in adolescents and adults using the creative arts, Somatic Experiencing and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). She is also passionate about the embodiment of self-care practices and how they inform and guide organizations to support therapists and the field of art therapy.

Nicole Krzan, MS, LPC, ATR (She/Her) is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Art Therapist originally from Norfolk, VA. She obtained her Master of Science in Art Therapy & Counseling at Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2017. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she completed her residency hours. Nicole has experience working in intensive in-home settings and serving communities throughout Oahu. Additionally, she has extensive experience from working at the mental health hospital Kahi Mohala, where she facilitated Art Therapy groups for all hospital units and programs such as child, adolescent, forensic adult, and partial hospitalization (PHP).
She currently resides in the upstate area of South Carolina and has been working in Private Practice with all age ranges since 2021. Occasionally, Nicole will travel back to Eastern Virginia Medical School to present as a guest speaker, assisting in educating future Art Therapy students to increase and enhance cultural awareness when working with populations such as East Asian, Multi-cultural, and Pacific Islander/Polynesian cultures. ​

Secretary 

​Madeline Centracchio, MS, LPC-A, ATR is a Registered Art Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, and Program Coordinator for MUSC’s Arts in Healing program in the Lowcountry. She works with individuals and groups across the lifespan with a focus on children and adolescents experiencing emotional and/or behavioral challenges in the school setting. Madeline is from Murrells Inlet, South Carolina where she found passions for art, the beach, and developing community. Madeline earned her bachelor’s degrees in Studio Art and Psychology from the College of Charleston and her Master of Science in Art Therapy from Florida State University. She also works on research teams implementing a strategic plan for art therapy research.
